Kenya Launches East Africa Halal Expo & Forum to Tap Trillion-Dollar Market

The event, scheduled for May 2026 in Nairobi, aims to connect East African businesses with global investors, certification bodies, and policymakers. The halal economy, spanning food, finance, pharmaceuticals, and tourism, is valued at over USD 7 trillion worldwide.

Speaking at the launch, Ambassador Jackline Yonga, on behalf of Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Dr. Korir Sing’oei, highlighted the opportunity: “By embracing halal principles, Kenya can unlock access to more than two billion consumers globally. This is not just about trade; it is about positioning our region for inclusive and sustainable growth.”

The private sector echoed the call. Mr. James Mureu, Chair of the KEPSA Economic Diplomacy Sector Board, said: “The halal economy represents lawful, ethical, and long-term growth. Kenya must invest in certification and supply chains so that our farmers, manufacturers, and service providers can compete effectively on the global stage.”

Arab envoys pledged support for the initiative. H.E. Hazem Shabat, Dean of the Arab Ambassadors to Kenya, remarked: “This Expo is more than an economic forum; it is a bridge of trust and cooperation between East Africa and the Arab world. We welcome Kenya’s ambition to become a halal hub for the region.”

Leadership from the Future Growth Forum underscored the strategic value of the launch. Chief Executive Officer Abdulaziz Billow Ali said: “Despite East Africa’s strategic position and rich resources, our region has only begun to scratch the surface of this immense opportunity. The Expo will showcase our innovators and entrepreneurs to the world.”

Chairman Mohamed Abdiqani Sidow added: “The halal economy is anchored on values of trust, quality, and inclusivity. Through this Expo, we are building a platform for Africa’s businesses to thrive in line with global standards while contributing to job creation and sustainable prosperity.”

The launch drew ambassadors from Egypt, Iraq, the UAE, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Pakistan, underlining international confidence in Kenya’s halal vision.

As preparations move toward the May 2026 forum, Kenya is positioning itself not only as a gateway to East Africa but as a global player in the halal value chain.
